Girl Scouts Spread Hope And Cheer During the 2006 Holiday
Season!
Junior
Girl Scout Troop and Brownie Troop from J.E. Jones School in
Cudahy, Wisconsin worked to complete a heart-warming service
project for patients in the Children’s Hospital H.O.T.
(Hematology, Oncology, Transplant) Unit. At their meeting, the
girls assembled kits of un-stuffed gingerbread dolls, wishing
stars, doll “birth certificates,” stuffing, craft
supplies and personal notes of encouragement. The dolls in the
kits were unassembled, and also came with all the necessary accessories
to create and stuff a unique, cuddly friend. The children receiving
the kits completed a fun holiday project during their hospital
stay as they created their own gingerbread doll.
The girls, who have purchased the items in the kits with proceeds from their sale of Girl Scout cookies last year, hope to make the project an annual troop tradition, and have already set their sights on earning more money to put together additional kits later in the year. The project is being done in collaboration with the Women of MACC Fund, who will distribute the kits to patients.
Building
Bears with our Community
A
4th grade troop from Whitefish Bay met to discuss what they
wanted to do with their cookie money. It was unanimous that the
girls wanted to use the dollars for both themselves and to help
somebody else. After brainstorming many ideas, the girls voted
on Build-A-Bear for their fun event. Next, they needed to brainstorm
about what others would need or want? More discussion took place.
Ideas were flying! Eventually, the girls realized that not all
girls get a chance to make a Build-A-Bear. That is when the troop
decided to invite girls from Big Brothers/Big Sisters to help
share the experience of building a bear. Twelve Little Sisters
participated in this event and everyone walked away with a new
teddy bear companion and life-long memories. The
troop felt so good about sharing their cookie money that they
decided to make Philanthropy
part of their yearly budget.
