For All the Girls: Camps Get an Extreme Makeover

We are deeply committed to providing world-class outdoor programs and facilities for every girl. We value the outdoor program and believe that it is a critical component of a memorable Girl Scout experience. We are very excited to announce that we are moving forward with Phase I of our “For All the Girls” Capital Campaign. This Campaign will modernize and expand our existing camp facilities including a year-round lodge and a welcome/health center at ACC with dedicated girl space, a shower facility (already constructed) at ACC, a renovated Hawthorne Hills to become the Jo Ann Mann Lodge with art space for girls at Silverbrook. We are creating places and spaces for girls. To-date; over $2.2 million has been raised towards our Capital Campaign goal of $5 million.

Significant lead gifts from donors such as The Bricco Fund, The Chapman Foundation, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation, Jane Gellman, the Peck Foundation Milwaukee, and Rockwell Automation have made it possible to move forward with the ambitious construction plans on our two sites.

Alice Chester

If you have visited the Camp Alice Chester Center recently, you have seen the finished projects. We broke ground in Fall 2005 to expand and enhance the Lodge, and create a Welcome Center. The improvements at the Lodge winterized the building, allowing for year-round activities. Modernizing the kitchen and dining hall allow the facility to accommodate the growing demand from girls in our teen and troop programs and outreach initiatives. The space now boasts a new trading post, loft and numerours girl-inspired elements such as a "Stairway to the Stars" observation tower. Click here for pictures of the projects.

The Welcome Center provides girls with a year-round health and multi-purpose program facility. This facility eases registration and medical screening activities for overnight camp, as well as provide ADA compliant ground level restrooms and showers. Click here for pictures of the Welcome Center

Other projects already completed at Alice Chester are the shower house, changing/bath house at the waterfront, and two new kitchen shelters for Walden and Frontier units. Click here for pictures

Silverbrook

In 2006, Jane Gellman took the lead to raise over $500,000 to rename Hawthorne Hill at the Silverbrook Program Center in honor of her mother and long time Girl Scout advocate, Jo Ann Mann. Renovation and expansion plans for the Jo Ann Mann Lodge (Hawthorne Hill) include an addition that will provide a new year-round rain or shine facility for arts and environmental programs, as well as double the size of the existing troop space. The most exciting aspect of this new addition is the new “Discovery Room” that will be located inside the Program Center. This space will become the central location for recreational activities that connect girls to the learning opportunities provided through our partnerships with environmental organizations like the Ice Age Trail Park and Foundation. Girls at the Helm

From the beginning, our architects, Uihlein Wilson, have ensured that girls play an integral role in the planning of the new spaces. They led extensive research efforts with girls from throughout the Milwaukee area participating in surveys, focus groups and discussions designed to get to the heart of what girls want and need in their camp experiences. In fact, staff from the firm held several brainstorming sessions with girls to gain their input on the design and functionality of the facility improvements.
