G.I.R.L.S.
Great Ideas & Real Learning Situations

This page will provide additional ideas for leaders and adults working in a troop setting. Watch for information on awards, ceremonies, snacks, crafts, games and more. This information will be updated with each issue of HowAbouts. Click here for past issues in PDF format

Edible Ocean

Ingredients:
1 package Jell-O Berry Blue*
1 cup Boiling water
2 cups Ice cubes
Gummy fish*
Directions:
1. Dissolve Jell-O in the boiling water.
2. Add ice cubes, stirring until Jell-O thickens. This will take about 3-5 minutes.
3. Remove any un-melted ice and spoon Jell-O into to clear sided bowl(s).
4. Poke 3 or 4 gummy fish into each dish of slightly thickened Jell-O.
5. Refrigerate at least 30 minute to allow it time to set.
* If you are unable to find the berry blue flavor from Jell-O or any of its competitors, use plain gelatin such as the store brand Knox, and add blue food coloring and/or flavoring to suit your taste. Another alternative would be to add a couple of drops of blue food coloring to lemon Jell-O to obtain the color green, or to use lime flavored Jell-O.

No-Sew Winter Hat

Don't throw out that old sweatshirt! Cut off the sleeves and turn them into winter hats in less than 15 minutes.
Needed:
Old Sweatshirt
Fabric Shears
Instructions:
Cut a sleeve off an old sweatshirt. Cut the elastic off the cuff. At the wrist end, cut slits up the sleeve about 6". Randomly tie slits together in double knots. Not all the slits need to be tied, some can just hang down. Roll the other end up twice to make a brim.

Black Magic

The leader picks a partner in crime and tells her this game. The leader tells the troop that she can read minds. She leaves the room. The partner tells the troop to pick out an object in the room. When they agree on one object the leader comes back in the room. The partner
points at objects and says, “Is it this?” The leader says no until she is asked if the picked object is this and says yes. The trick is that the partner can point to anything and the leader will say no but when she is ready for the leader to say, “That’s IT!!” she points to something
black. Then the leader knows that the next thing she says is it. See how often you can fool the troop before they figure it out.

Autumn Yarn Painting

Leaves
Thin cardboard
pencil or pen
scissors
tacky glue
