Adventure Sports #377
Why? Participation in athletic activities is important for physical health, building social skills and in many other areas of girls’ lives. Report on the Status of Girls in Wisconsin (2007)
Girls will get ready for their bike adventure by earning most of the Adventure Sports badge. After lunch, they’ll bike the White River Bike Trail near Elkhorn, WI to get comfortable and confident. With time and interest, girls can also try mountain biking terrain for a bigger thrill. Best of Friends
Why? In a study conducted by GSUSA, teen girls reported that their feelings of safety revolved around the presence and support of their peers and the adults in their lives.
This program is for girls of all ages and their mom, grandmother or other female adult role model to have fun in the outdoors. Swim, create crafts, play games and relax together at camp. Fees include meals, snacks, lodging and supplies.
Who: All girls and their special female adult. This is a troop and non-troop event. It is important for every girl to have an adult female with her for that special bonding time. One adult with her two girls is welcome.
When: Summer dates will be listed in our summer program book and on our website starting in February.

C.A.R.E.: Healthy Body/Health Mind
Mother/Daughter Woman's Health Program
Come to the 7th Annual Mother/Daughter female health program. To learn is to empower! Girls surveyed wanted a program for themselves and their mothers on Woman's Healthy Body/Healthy Mind. Join staff from Aurora Health Care and the Youth Leadership Council as we discuss eating healthy, stress, heart disease, sleep and exercise, positive attitude, hormones and mood swings as well as cancers unique to females.
Who: Girl Scouts ages 10 & up plus their mothers/female role model

Circle of Skills
Why? Through outdoor recreation activities, girls enjoy the outdoors, learn skills based on teamwork and individual competence, and learn how they can use the land responsibly.
Ready for the call of the wild? This four-part outdoor skills and readiness program is for Junior Girl Scouts and older. You and your troop will obtain valuable outdoor skills that will prepare you for a high-adventure, girl-planned camping trip that could include backpacking, caving, rock climbing or any combination of these.
TRAILSEEKERS #598
In this first section, girls and leaders receive an orientation to and practice the basic outdoor skills. These include knots, cooking, fire building, knife safety and first aid. Spend the night in a platform tent or A-frame cabin and learn to cook two meals over a fire!
Please note: Leaders who actively participate in Trailseekers will become Outdoor Skills trained upon completion of an Outdoor Skills Mini Course. See course description under “Training Course Offerings.”

This second section of Circle of Skills advances the basic eight outdoor skills. You’ll also be introduced to orienteering and canoeing. This will bring you one step closer to planning your own trip! Troops who want to come early and spend Friday night at camp may reserve their site for an additional $20 per troop. This is more than 50% off the standard one night rate.

After completing Trailseekers, Explorers and Trackers, your troop can plan and carry out their own adventure trip with the guidance of the Outdoor Program Manager. This trip should encompass at least three days and involve the skills learned in the first three sections.

Where: Determined by troop. Silverbrook Program Center’s Trip Equip can be your guide whether you are planning canoeing, climbing, biking or hiking.
Cost: Patches upon completion may be purchased for $1.50. Since this part of the series is self-directed, the troop will determine the dates and costs.

Cross-Country Skiing #501
Why? In 2005, 72.5% of Wisconsin high school girls did not meet currently recommended levels of physical activity. Report on the Status of Girls in Wisconsin (2007)
Come explore the winter woods of Alice Chester Center on skis. We’ll practice in the field, then it’s off to the trail. If there is not enough snow, we’ll take a scavenger hunt hike and make a craft. If participants choose to use personal equipment, they are welcome to bring it along.

Why? Nationally, a third of volunteers aged 18-29 cite youth volunteer experiences as a significant influence on their adult volunteering.
Come and celebrate Earth Day at Alice Chester Center. Girls will plant trees, create art work from recycled materials, and encourage others to help our environment. Before you head for home, you will join us in our own Earth Day Celebration.

Family Day Escape

Finding your way is a great skill – wherever you are! Girls will use a compass, map, and a GPS (global positioning system) unit as they explore and navigate through the woods and fields at Silverbrook Program Center. They’ll even try geocaching and letterboxing.

Why? Research conducted by Dr. Karen Fingerman, assistant professor of human development and family studies at Penn State, has shown that mothers and daughters simply enjoy one another's company and maintain strong ties that stem from their shared experiences.

New Year’s Bash #593
Ring in the New Year at this fun-filled lock-in at the Alice Chester Lodge, to kick-off 2008 on the healthy track. Come enjoy lots of fun, games, and healthy food galore. Learn about healthy lifestyles and some easy exercises to get you on the right track for the New Year.
There will be plenty of time to perform karaoke, play bingo and do crafts. We’ve got all night, and party hats and noisemakers for everyone! The teen loft will be available for the entire evening. Girls will be divided into age level groups for programming.

Located on Booth Lake in the beautiful southern Kettle Moraine area, where you can come for a summer overnight camp program. Meet staff and have the opportunity to ask questions. Is your troop ready to explore a new direction in camping? Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail features wonderful backcountry shelters and backpacking opportunities galore! Science Saturday for Juniors
Time for more science fun at Mad Science of Milwaukee. Your troop will enjoy plenty of cool interactive experiments with one of our trained Mad Scientists. Girls can complete either the Making it Matter or Science Discovery Badge, or both. All this, and cool take-homes, too!

Stars Stand Out
Be amazed by the stars in the sky of our planetarium theater: learn how to find several constellations and how to use them for navigation. In addition to stars and their myths, you will investigate planets, look closely at the Moon, and learn more about space debris such as meteors and comets, while you check out some of the tools that astronomers use.

W.E.S.T. Family Science Day
Come and join us to explore the structures and beauty of spring flower bulbs, learn about science and inflate a lung! Guests 13 and older will also have the opportunity to tour the Jones Island waste water treatment plant (must wear closed toe shoes). Educators from Discovery World, Milwaukee Public Museum, Wisconsin Humane Society, Camp Discovery and many others will lead hands-on activities for the whole family. Science will be used to explore the world around us in a fun and engaging way. Coordinated through the Wisconsin Elementary and Middle Level Science Teachers.

Youth Class-Adventure Rock
This class with the experts at Adventure Rock will instruct girls on the proper way to wear a harness and basic climbing techniques. Chaperones will be taught proper belay technique on their “clip ‘n go” stations for a group/team oriented program. Chaperones are also encouraged to try their hand (and feet) at rock climbing. Council Leadership Opportunities

Leadership councils are highly esteemed girl-developed and girl-led council-sponsored opportunities. Leadership opportunities are advised by expert volunteer Adult Advisors and staff members to ensure safety standards and girl-led development. Leadership council Alumni have completed Gold and/or Silver Award projects and have gone on to be effective and esteemed members of their community.

Camper Council
Campers from Camp Silverbrook and Camp Alice Chester meet 4-5 times a year to plan the next summer. This includes trading post merchandise, programs, t-shirt designs and theme.
Who: Girls who have attended at least one session at either camp currently in Grades 2-12.
When: We meet on a weekday evening from 6-7 p.m. at the Marion Chester Read Center. Dates to be determined.
Contact the Camp Alice Chester Director by Sept. 14 if you are interested in being a part of Camper Council.

Leadership Mission
Girls will learn and practice the skills of girl planning in a fun environment. They will design, plan and facilitate programs for younger girls and help with the creating of communications for their peers and others. "I liked being able to help younger girls and planning events," says one Leadership Mission Girl Scout.
Who: Girls in grade 4-6th grade are eligible to apply for membership.
When: Applications are accepted on an on-going basis.
Where: Meetings are held at the Marion Chester Read Center once per month.
Capacity: 40
