Camp Silverbrook is located just 32 miles northwest of Milwaukee near West
Bend, Wisconsin. The 265 acre program center surrounds pristine Lucas Lake,
a crystal clear 80 acre body of water fed by Silver Creek.
The Louis Lucas family settled on the property in 1868. Over the course of 3 lifetimes, they harvested cranberries, farmed, sold spring water and ran a popular resort and dance hall. Leonie Lucas, Louis’ daughter, became sole proprietor of the family’s business when her brother, Edward, passed away in 1953. She sought to preserve the Lucas dream and heritage by keeping the property intact. In 1957, ignoring offers from local businessmen, she sold the entire parcel to the Girl Scouts of Milwaukee Area. Silverbrook has three spacious troop houses provide adventure for troops and groups year-round. Accommodations: North Star – 20, Sandy Point – 34, and the new Jo Ann Mann Lodge (scheduled to open in 2008) has two levels for either 2 separate troops or a large troop/group. Each would sleep up to 20. All three units have lakeside views and are equipped with large kitchen shelters, leaders’ rooms, fireplaces, indoor bathrooms and showers.
Seasonal facilities include Badger and Dell with units with sturdy wall tents and a storm flies erected over a wooden deck making a very comfortable “canvas cabin.” Lookout Peak features “Adirondacks”—wood frame shelters with permanent bunks common in state parks and forests for hikers. All seasonal units have fully equipped kitchen shelters and mattresses.
Silverbook Program Center refers to summer activities, led by a seasonal resident staff, for troops and groups. Programs include day and overnight sessions and meet all age and experience levels. You can enjoy Silverbrook any season of the year. Swimming, boating and canoeing are very popular on Lucas Lake. Hiking is a favorite in the spring and fall. The Lucas Lake Trail (2.5 miles) follows the shoreline and crosses Silver Creek. Snow shoeing (rental equipment available), ice-skating, and ice fishing are favorite winter activities. Note: There are no sled runs at Silverbrook.
Emergency assistance is provided by an “on-call” property staff member. The Silverbrook Site Ranger lives off the property and works primarily Monday through Friday maintaining the camp and preparing facilities for usage. The Council’s Director: Outdoor Assets resides on the site. Both numbers are posted on unit bulletin boards.
One noteworthy nearby attraction is Riveredge Nature Center. Riveredge is located about 15 minutes west of Silverbrook. Special program activities are offered to Girl Scouts. Reservations may be made by calling 262-675-6888.
Sledding hills are available at Ridge Run County Park adjacent to Silverbrook Camp. Ask Site Ranger for directions.
