Who We Are

Swimming at Alice Chester Center Girl Scouts of Milwaukee Area (GSMA) is Milwaukee’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives—like strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. In Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together. Through the many enriching experiences provided by the Girl Scouts, they can grow courageous and strong.

Awards Received

In November 2005, GSMA was awarded the Nonprofit Management Excellence Award for Diversity in recognition of our commitment to reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve.
GSMA has also received the United Way of Greater Milwaukee’s Award of Excellence, which was given to only eight Milwaukee non-profits to recognize excellent work in reporting and using outcome data.
ACA Accreditation- Alice Chester Center and Silverbrook Program Center comply with over 300 standards of operations by the American Camp Association. Both camps complied with the highest standards in the camp industry. ACA Accreditation ensures parents that our outdoor program centers provide a high-quality and enriching experience for their daughters.
Girl Scouts of Milwaukee Area is proud to be the only four-time recipient of the GSUSA Quality Award. This prestigious award is given to a select number of Girl Scout councils annually for the development of outstanding new programs that can serve as models for other councils. GSMA has received this award for the following programs:
- 2001-Girl Sports “Girls of Summer Program”- Over 120 girls participated in a summer softball league program promoting physical fitness and healthy habits, while learning new skills and having lots of fun.
- 1999 - Zink the Zebra Patch Program - Girls learn to understand and accept people's differences and celebrate what makes everyone unique.
- 1998 - Step into ACTION - Troops participate in a community needs assessment process that allows them to identify and lead community service projects.
- 1997 - Marion Chester Read Leadership Luncheon - Recognized outstanding former Girl Scouts for their achievements as community leaders who attribute their positive skills and characteristics to the Girl Scouting experience.
